Founded at the height of the California Gold rush, Gold was found in the area washed down from the American River South Fork into what is now known as El Dorado Hills and Folsom. While the area was mostly a farming and ranching community, the area is 18.6 miles from the 1848 gold find site in Coloma, making it a hotbed for gold-seekers called “forty-niners”.
Today, the history of the area largely dates back to the early 1960s, when the original developer Alan Lindsey started planning of a master-community covering the area generally north of U.S. Highway 50. The community was envisioned as a group of residential “villages.”
This included an 18-hole golf course, community and business parks, a community shopping center, and each village containing it’s own small commercial center. This planned stressed the importance of open space between each village to allow the opportunity for outdoor recreation.
Commercial and population growth greatly accelerated around the year 2000, in which development began in the Town Center Zone to create a true downtown district.
